Where did that run come from?

January 11, 2010

I went for a run tonight. It was 34 degrees (windchill was 31) when I started. For about a minute I considered going to the gym and running on the wretched treadmill, but I changed my mind when I remembered that last year I really enjoyed running in these temps. So I got out my cold-weather running gear, strapped on my new Garmin Forerunner 405 (LOVE!!), and headed out for my run.

For several reasons, I thought the run would be miserable – 1) It’s been 5 days since my last run, which was pretty wimpy in its own right. 2) I drank a LOT this weekend. 3) Friday night I was out until 3am, woke up at 6am, threw a baby shower for a friend, and then stayed out until 5am Saturday night/Sunday morning. 4) I had pizza for lunch AND dinner yesterday, and spent most of the day napping off and on while watching football and recovering from Friday and Saturday night. 5) I was pretty tired from work today. 6) It is cold out!!

However, I ended up feeling great through the entire run! Although it’s depressing to see how slow I am, I’m absolutely obsessed with the Garmin. I ran 3.53 miles, and while my time/distance is not amazing and I’ve certainly done better, I can’t remember the last time I felt so good during and after a run. Now I remember why I like running in the cold so much! Mid-30s? Yes, please! I guess it’s a good thing we’re moving to Alaska, since there will be a lot more of those types of temperatures in my future! ;)

(p.s. – I also updated my Running page tonight, if you’re interested)

I want a Garmin so bad… I think just owning one would make me a better runner! lol. But I’m still playing around with the Nike+ sportsband…

You are brave! I need break out and start going outside more, as I spend most of my time on a treadmill and its just not the same. The weather is really intimidating me though- so can I ask what you wear to stay warm but not overheat?

I overheat REALLY easily, which is why I like running in the cold. Last night I wore running tights, and an UnderArmour long-sleeved compression shirt with a light addidas running jacket over top of it. I also wore running gloves and a headband that covers my ears. I was the perfect temperature the whole time. I unzipped the neck of my jacket a bit after the second mile, and took my gloves off near the end too. :)
